The multichannel video installation “Sólo un monte conoce las entrañas de otro monte” (Only a mountain knows the entrails of another mountain) a hypothetical dialogue between nineteen women, whose archives have been neglected or abandoned. Candiani uses archival material from Mexican artists, activists, academics, and thinkers in order to criticize Mexico’s historical gender inequality and the conditions that foster discrimination. To do this, it uses two screens in which sound and video records allusive to Lola Álvarez Bravo, Tina Modotti, María Sabina, Concha Michel, Pita Amor, Benita Galeana and Nahui Olin, among others, alternate and interact with the proclamations of a group of current women who form the tip of an arrow. She thus confronts the present of women with those conditions that prevailed in the time of Frida Kahlo.
The video installation is completed by the textile “Para el contingente” (for the contingent), a banner that was used on March 8, 2022 at the demonstration in Mexico City for International Women’s Day.
The piece was commissioned by La vaca independiente, producciones, curated by Jessica Berlanga, and was presented at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, as part of the exhibition “El diario de Frida Kahlo” in July 2022.
