68

DETALLES DEL PROYECTO

68 refers to a graphic design element that was used during the Olympics in Mexico in 1968, based-according to the designers Wyman and Terrazas on elements of Mexican popular art, mainly Huichol art. At the peak of visual art, the logo of Mexico 68 revolutionized graphics models.

This project is explicitly based on the images of the dresses used by the hostesses during this event. In the piece, the original design was modified continuing the lines that formed the word Mexico and leaving it veiled, alluding the silence and concealment of the massacre of students in Tlatelolco, just a few weeks before the Olympics, and similar movements that occurred in many parts of the world that same year. Also, the shape of the dress – the pattern – was replaced by the straight lines of the traditional “huipil” construction, and the format of the painting preserves the measurements of a dress.
