DETALLES DEL PROYECTO

The recovery, decontextualization and rereading of traditional dances of pre-Hispanic and colonial origin based on the analysis of the narrative, symbolic, sound and choreographic parts that compose them, are a constant in Candiani’s work.

The Afro-Indo-Latin American, that is to say the relations between the African, the indigenous, the mestizo and the Western, is in Mexico a hidden and forgotten history.

The Danza de los Negritos, arises from the indigenous interpretation of an African healing rite and is one of the rare evidence of this relationship. The Dance tells the story of a black slave from the Veracruz sugar mills who was cured thanks to a ritual of African origin from the bite of a snake.

“Los sanes de la curación” (”Sanes” of healing), are the movements with which the “Caporal” (foreman) directs the rest of the black boys to spin around until the snake dies.
