Sound action for voices and instruments that intertwines different paradigms of understanding life, from the knowledge contributed by ancestral Indigenous cosmovisions to the implications of quantum physics. Understood as a choreographic narrative, Quantum Prelude is situated in the unam’s Sculptural Space in order to orchestrate the sounds produced by the musicians participating in the action as a possible score. The circular, megalithic monument, circumscribed by 64 triangular prisms, was mirrored by 64 musicians, thus replicating the constitutive arithmetic, geometrical and harmonic qualities of the sound of music—the laws of physics, the organizing principle of the nature and expanse of the cosmos.
This piece is structured by establishing a parallel between the Sculpture Space, a circular public sculpture 120 m in diameter (Silva, Escobedo, Hersúa, Felguérez, Goeritz and Sebastián, 1981) from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and the Grand Collider. CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) Hadron Test. This relationship intersects conceptually and visually with a sound performance for voices and instruments created specifically for the Espacio Escultórico that explores the relationships between the narrative of quantum physics, the worldviews of native peoples, and the natural understanding of the scale of things.
This piece was produced with the support of INTERprotección, for the exhibition “Tania Candiani. Como el trazo, su sonido (Like the Trace Its Sound)”.
Curated by Virginia Roy & Jessica Berlanga-Taylor
