Gordas (Fat)

Fat (Gordas) is a series of works made between 2002 and 2005 that focus on the problems of the female body and the environment that defines it. Sculptures, paintings, videos, neon lights, recycled objects, installations, dietary recipes and even medical recommendations have shaped this project that analyzes female physical stereotypes, the influence of advertising and its effects on self-esteem.

This project takes as a starting point magazines and television programs aimed at women, diets, weight reduction treatments, pills, magic products, cosmetic surgeries, exercise routines, among others.

In this series of portraits, the bodies of women were sewn onto a canvas to confront the characters in opposite situations: one asks for food and the other repudiates it.

El Ring (The Ring)

This installation is a parody of a boxing ring that proposes the visitor to experience an overweight body. When donning the vest, the users carry thirty kilos and with them they fight against a lined punching bag with diets based on rigorous fasting.

Access to the ring is marked by a series of scales operated with high-calorie recipes.

Liposucción (Liposuction)

The same naked woman, portrayed from the front and from behind, is represented with volume, in which a plastic surgeon marked the incisions that are made to the body in a liposuction process. For these pieces, instead of removing fat from the body, he filled himself in creating these soft sculptures.

Is an installation that consists of a deep pink space that contains a refrigerator suspended from the ceiling with a neon sign with the word “light”, a chair that simulates a voluminous female body and an acrylic table built with fragments of plastic dolls.

This space turns the obsession with thinness, the rejection of obesity and the love-hate relationship with food into a set of hallucinatory metaphors for these collective concerns.

Gimnasio (Gym)

This installation consists of a simulation of a gym made up of old exercise machines, “miracle towels to disappear fat”, a painting based on the advertisement for one of the machines, a video projected onto the street and an audio piece.

The protagonist of the video is a famous instructor of that time, who performs the exercise routine on the vinyl record Gimnasia in his home of Federico Vellanowethm, the first person to have an exercise program on Mexican television, referring to the origin of the obsession with thinness on television.

Comedoras Compulsivas (Compulsive eaters) is a series of soft sculptures of hungry characters with cotton heads wrapped in rope and thread and with dentures.
